2021 ECONOMICS CHALLENGE INFORMATION

The 2021 Michigan Economics Challenge will be a virtual event. We will be doing things a bit differently this year due to the inability to meet face to face. Teachers will create their participating teams during the spring in preparation for a May 1 state finals event. Note this date is much later than usual and will allow you to get to a lot more content than you normally would be able to. It is also on a Saturday so it doesn't interfere with the school day.

There will be no qualifying test prior to the state finals event. Each teacher will be able to create a maximum of 4 teams in each division that will be allowed to participate in the State Finals on May 1. The teams should consist of a minimum of 3 students with a maximum of 4 students per team. There will still be an Adam Smith division for those who have taken an AP/IB course or participated previously and a David Ricardo division for everyone else. On May 1, students will join a Zoom meeting and then begin 3 rounds of testing online. Upon conclusion of testing, the top two teams in each division will face off in a quiz bowl broadcast on Facebook Live to determine the Michigan state champion.

Please register so we can continue to communicate with you about the Economics Challenge. We will ask for the names of participating students and the number of teams you will have participating around the middle of April.

Teams of three or four high school students compete in a series of challenging tests to demonstrate their economic understanding and reasoning skills. The Challenge matches your team’s understanding of economics with teams from other schools.

Every Michigan school district will have the opportunity to hold a preliminary first round of the Challenge online. The top teams from across Michigan will be invited to participate in a three-round State Finals competition.

Round 1
Microeconomics

Round 2
Macroeconomics

Round 3
International & Current Events

The two teams with the highest scores after round three will then compete for the state title in a fast-paced “Quiz Bowl” round. The fun does not stop there! The winner of the state title will compete in an online Regional competition with a chance to qualify for the National Finals!
